After Earth Day, Beltane Rising
by Ruby Sara
Out of my fear and trouble I can sing
Because the Earth endures and within Her
I can be confident of the goodness of my life.
-from Psalm 27 in Earth Psalms by Angela Magara
Greetings, beloveds, from the incandescent, sweet, cold and windy burn of the fiercely wild urban midwest! The sky is on fire with Beltane. The day before was washed and made holy by thunder and rain, and Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King played the day on their lightning guitars and told me stories as I slept. Today, the land riots with a clean, chilly sunlight, and the green in the grass and up the mossy trunks of trees is so brilliant that it leaves afterimages on my eyelids. The Kore has come, and she shakes out her hair and laughs sparrows and lilacs, and Beltane rises!! Io Kore! Io Mama!
I’ve been away from PG for a bit, celebrating the release of Datura: An Anthology of Esoteric Poesis. It was a weekend full of great poetry, great food, and great friends. I pray thanks to those friends, to the glorious day for its blessing, and for the spring in full display. In my time away, I missed the opportunity to blog for Earth Day, but was awash in the gifts of the blogosphere that celebrated the unmatched beauty of the Mama, as well as posts that made me ponder still the lessons She has to teach (also…how is it I have only just become aware of Angela Magara’s Earth Psalms? What a wonderful Earth Day gift – thank you, Beth!). But even though that day has passed, I am reminded, especially as the Mama is dancing so hard she is on fire with joy out the window and on the porch, and as the beloved Sun glitters through new leaves and falls on my hands even as I type this, that every day is Mama’s Day. Every day. Even the ugly days, when no wind stirs and the ground cracks. When no birds sing and the sun has gone into seclusion. Even then, the Mama is singing. We may remember to sing back in particular on days that shine as hard as this one, but She is always there, and every day is Hers. Every day is Hers, because She is the genesis of all days.
More soon, beloveds, as I collect my thoughts and make ready for the new season. But for this moment, I can only sing, shout Io! and grok Earth…
…and pray without ceasing.
