I love it:
“Bush simply cannot be the Devil. He simply doesn’t have the chops.” -Mark Morford
Morford articulates some amusing points regarding the figure of Lucifer. A wickedly clever article, though there are points I would quibble with. I definitely think it says some interesting things about what we think of as the Devil and what we think of as evil. For me, they are not synonomous. Bush is Evil. The Devil is Sexy. Maybe instead of “Bush is the Devil” we should rather say “Bush is the Embodiment of Evil,” which is more to the point and relies less on inaccurate stereotyping of gods and spirits. Or, maybe, Bush is an embodiment of evil – or a minion of evil, or a part of the larger evil whole.
Though there is the question, as a coworker of mine asked - of whether Bush is really evil? Is it more that he is merely the champion of a particular worldview, the masthead of an evil empire? Is one evil if one is perpetrating evil but believing strongly that one is doing good (I gotta go with yes on this one)? Is deep stupidity evil? There are many in America with the same views and opinions as Bush – he has more power, but he’s not a unique personality. He’s not even a unique political personality. Admittedly, Dick Cheney may truly be Satan, but we’re not talking about him. Alls I’m saying is – some interesting theological underpinnings to the portrayal of Bush as the Lord of Darkness of Biblical fame. More ruminations on Lucifer & “the Devil” perhaps to come….
Though I wouldn’t have people saying that I didn’t enjoy Chavez’ rant. I sure as hell did. You gotta love that man – he ain’t perfect, but he’s got sass.
